Ned Irving

I was born in Barcelona in 1968. I grew up on the Mediterranean island of Ibiza where I attended Spanish, French and British schools before finishing high school in Mexico. I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts in 1992 and moved to Berlin, Germany in 1993.
My passion for photography began at the age of 16 when my father gifted me my first analogue camera and continued throughout my professional career as a musician, composer and voiceover artist.
In 2008 I became fascinated with the reflective and refractive imagery produced on the surface of and in water. These fluid, fleeting images, sometimes appearing to be random, can only be captured by stopping time within a fraction of a second.
At the same time reflections of architectural subject matter in windows and window facades of buildings caught my eye. Panes of glass are uneven resulting in distorted images of the subject observed in them. Unlike water these images stand still, but are also challenging to capture, as they are sometimes hundreds of meters away, thus requiring absolute precision in execution.
Then I began creating multiple exposure, multi-layered abstract compositions of subject matter photographed from various angles and distances. I had a clear idea of what the compositions should look like and it took several years until I was satisfied with the results. I call this style, Fusion photography.
I immersed myself in a world that alters structure, form, and color, and blurs the lines between reality and abstraction, sometimes resulting in photographs that look like paintings. I have been developing these styles ever since.
Taking pictures is something I’ve always done for myself out of pure enjoyment and passion.
I hope you enjoy what you see here as much as I do.
“In my 30+ years as an art curator, I have not seen anything quite like Ned Irving’s photography.”
-Christian Kneisel, art curator Berlin.
