Caustic Networks

This is a selection of photographs of caustic networks which are sometimes called light ripples.  Caustic networks are patterns of bright, wavy lines created when light is refracted (bent) by the water’s surface and then focused onto the sand or sea bed below.  The result is a shimmering, wavy, dynamic pattern of light that moves with the water.

The photographs were all taken using a polarizing filter which reduces the glare of light while darkening other areas. The photos were all taken on coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea.  The photos have undergone some color and contrast editing and some of them are double or triple exposures, further increasing the the web like complexity of the rippling light.

The structure in each photograph has been left virtually intact.  All water motion effects come from the water itself.
